Park Haven Care Home – The Beeches, Maghull – Full MEP Design and Build

Project Overview Barlows was appointed to deliver the complete MEP design and build for The Beeches, a specialist dementia care home operated by the registered charity Parkhaven Trust in Maghull, Merseyside.

The Beeches is a state-of-the-art, purpose-built facility providing residential, nursing, and dementia care services. Designed with input from experts including the Dementia Design Centre at Stirling University, the building creates a supportive, homely environment for up to 45 residents across three distinct households (each accommodating around 15 people). This layout promotes independence, wellbeing, and a calm atmosphere while meeting all current CQC requirements and best-practice dementia-friendly design principles.

Key Features

  • 45 en-suite bedrooms configured across three household clusters
  • Homely communal lounges, dining areas, and activity spaces within each household
  • Secure, accessible gardens and outdoor areas integrated with the historic parkland setting
  • Modern kitchen, laundry, and support facilities
  • Comprehensive MEP systems including energy-efficient heating and ventilation, reliable hot/cold water services, intelligent lighting and power distribution, fire detection and suppression, data/comms infrastructure, and emergency systems

All installations prioritise quiet operation, low maintenance, infection control compliance, and sustainability to support 24/7 care delivery in a peaceful, residential-like setting.

Delivery and Collaboration Barlows worked in close partnership with Robertson Group (main contractor) to ensure seamless integration of MEP services into the purpose-built structure. The project required careful coordination to deliver robust, future-proof systems that align with healthcare-adjacent standards, resident safety protocols, and energy efficiency goals.

Key delivery focuses included:

  • Minimising disruption during construction within an established charitable estate
  • Incorporating dementia-friendly features such as intuitive controls and unobtrusive technology
  • Full compliance with building regulations, CQC expectations, and relevant HTM guidance where applicable

Outcome The Beeches has become a flagship service for Parkhaven Trust, enhancing specialist dementia care provision in North Liverpool and Sefton since its completion. It provides residents with a high-quality, supportive environment that emphasises dignity, choice, and quality of life, while enabling staff to deliver exceptional person-centred care.

This project demonstrates Barlows’ specialist expertise in full MEP delivery for dementia and elderly care facilities, ensuring reliable, compliant, and user-focused building services in collaboration with trusted partners like Robertson Group.
