an ‘Outstanding’ rated sixth form in Manchester, required a state-of-the-art facility to meet a 44% rise in STEM student numbers since 2018. The project involved the demolition of the original 1840s Sunbury Building and the construction of a modern flagship hub for Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Medical Sciences. The new block features four high-spec science labs and eight demonstration labs designed by Pozzoni Architecture.

The Challenge: Live Campus Integration
The primary challenge was executing a complex MEP installation on a tightly enclosed, live campus in south Manchester. Engineers had to ensure minimal disruption to the nearly 3,000 students and staff while integrating cutting-edge systems into a site located within the Victoria Park Conservation Area.
MEP Scope of Works
The full MEP design and installation package focused on energy efficiency and future-ready infrastructure:
  • Electrical Infrastructure: Installed a full low-voltage (LV) distribution network starting from the external substation, including a new section panel and multiple LV boards to support the building’s increased power demands.
  • Mechanical Systems: Delivered a comprehensive mechanical design package, including EPC and BRUKL calculations to ensure the building met strict sustainability and carbon footprint reduction goals.
  • Specialised Lab Services: Coordinated the integration of essential lab utilities, including mobile fume cupboards, gas services for chemistry labs, and power outlets for physics demonstration areas.
  • Sustainability Features: Integrated energy-efficient systems throughout the “Sunbury Science Hub” to support the college’s commitment to a net-zero future.

Barlows were the MEP services subcontractor on the recently completed Holiday Inn Hotel in Blackpool town centre.
We enjoyed working with Barlows and found them to be collaborative, proactive and professional in their approach and they demonstrated experience and knowledge with respect to undertaking hotel MEP services works.
Barlows have also been responsive, attentive and professional when responding to defects that have occurred during the twelve month defects liability period.
